Singing in Seattle

Have you ever applauded in the church? Have you ever heard bass guitar and drums in the church? Have you ever seen pastor excited jumps during his speech? Go to the Mount Zion Baptist church in Seattle and you will see.

The parishioners are very supportive of their pastor talks. It is indeed feels like very interactive activity. Here and there you constantly get “Yeah!” or “He will!” or “Oh, Well!” or “Alright!”. And you can’t help but think that it seems more like a groupp of friends then a religious community.

Wherever  you take a sit you get Holly Bible, Hymnal and a fan in case it’s too hot in the church. And it’s really can get hot there because afro-americans have inborn feeling of rhythms and simply can’t sit when the choir is singing and dancing. It’s amazing how exited everybody gets. The hands go in the air, heads nod along and lips repeat familiar hymnal lyrics.

No wonder that the music is very up beating, the church band has all kinds of instruments: two pianos, different drums, a bass-guitar and a big pipe organ. All the musicians and singers of the church rehearse as much as regular ones. As manager Mrs Burrly said anyone is welcome to join the choir.

  1. Are Baptists mostly afro-americans? I see only one European-looking man on the photos.

  2. The Baptist church does not have nationality or race restrictions on membership. Mostly there were black people in the Church, but a few white ppl there were too (either in the choir and the audience)
